Program Overview
The Phoenix Rising Summer Program is an opportunity for NLCP students to participate in three consecutive summers of off-site enrichment experiences at leadership development programs, academic and college programs and internship programs. Phoenix Rising is a key building block in fulfilling the school’s mission to “prepare young people from under-resourced communities for graduation from high school with the academic skills and personal resilience necessary for successful completion of college.”
The mission of Phoenix Rising is:
- to connect students with enrichment opportunities that may have otherwise been unavailable to them.
- to complement the academically rigorous school-year program.
- to develop leadership and academic skills that can be applied both inside and outside of the classroom.
- to enhance college readiness.
- to offer students experiences that will give them a competitive edge when they begin the college admission and scholarship application processes.
- to prepare families for their children’s ultimate departure for college by providing multiple opportunities to practice the absence of their children from the family system.

Student Feedback
Students that attend Phoenix Rising programs indicate that the program is strengthening participant self-confidence, enhancing NLCP’s student life, and increasing students’ desire to excel in high school and progress to college.
Every year students who have participated in Phoenix Rising in complete evaluations to provide both quantitative and qualitative feedback. Here are some of the impressive statistics:
- 86 percent agreed or strongly agreed that their Phoenix Rising experience positively changed how they value their high school education.
- 84 percent agreed or strongly agreed that their Phoenix Rising experience positively changed how they value their college education.
- 92 percent reported they learned new ideas for leadership in and out of the classroom.
- 84 percent reported they made a new friend of a different race or religion.
The best parts of our students’ Phoenix Rising experiences were…
- “camping out under the stars.”
- “meeting people from all over the world.”
- “being able to learn in an intense learning environment.”
- “the campus life, activities and the cafeteria.”
The biggest challenges our students faced at their Phoenix Rising experience were…
- “getting up for class after all that fun.”
- “the twenty page paper.”
- “managing my time.”
- “to open up to other people.”
The biggest lessons our students learned from Phoenix Rising were...
- “in college you should have fun, but you have to prioritize your work first.”
- “that a life away from home is a life that everyone must live.”
- “how to meet and interact with new people.”
- “that you can make a difference in your community.”
- “that leadership has many different styles.”

How friends of NLCP Can Help Out
- We’re in need of additional internship opportunities. Can you provide a valuable work experience for a student this summer?
- We’re always looking for scholarship opportunities so our students can attend leadership & academic programs. Would you like to sponsor a student?
- We’re looking for individuals to help cover travel costs. Can you cover the cost of a train or plane ticket? Do you have extra airline miles that you can donate?
