Gold Medal for NLCP Science Olympiad Team
On Saturday, February 28, 2009 the NLCP Science Olympiad Teams competed in the New Trier Regional Science Tournament where the mighty Phoenix had to pit their science knowledge and skills against 7-time state champ New Trier as well as state powerhouses such as Naperville North, Glenbrook South, Niles North, University of Chicago Lab School, Loyola Academy, and many more.
The Varsity team, made up of Destaney Davis, Cadavian Dean, Derrick Finley, Erick Finley, Chris Frills, Jessica Harris, Brandon Hummons, Kayla Jones, Alexis Sherrod, Brittany Wiggins, and Brittany Williams medaled in four different events: Experimental Design, Bridge Building, It's About Time, and Write-It/Do-It!
The four event medals and top 11 team standing set team records and new standards of excellence for the NLCP Science Olympiad Team. Congratulations to all medal winners and all team members!
The JV team earned two medals - a 3rd place in It’s About Time and a 1st place in Write-It/Do-It. Prior to this year’s Varsity team performance those two medals tied a record for any NLCP Science Olympiad team and is the first gold medal on any level in our seven year history.

- One Small Step for North Lawndale College Prep High School (NLCP), Another Giant Leap for Its Students
The failure of our young African-American males to succeed is not a matter of just curriculum, seat time or state funding. It is a matter of ethical development. North Lawndale College Prep High School understands that in order to close the "academic" gap, the "ethical" gap must first be addressed. NLCP has continued to find creative ways to prepare its students for college and mainstream society.
Next week, 30 young men and their adult mentors from NLCP will engage in an “Ethical Leadership” Orientation delivered by young college men from VisionQuest International, a non-profit founded by Chicago native, Walter Earl Fluker, Ph.D. Dr. Fluker is currently Executive Director of The Leadership Center at Morehouse College and Coca-Cola Professor of Leadership Studies.
VisionQuest has a 10-year track record with a mission to identify, recruit and train a new generation of ethical leaders. After their initial ethical leadership experience, these young men of NLCP will continue their training, ultimately becoming "peer" trainers for the rest of their fellow students. Staff representatives from Chicago Public Schools will also attend the weeklong training to prepare them to bring the program to CPS schools.
